these are some of the many, many models I made to illustrate my initial ideas for this project. I’m really enjoying the form of the condensation collecting toothbrush with the leaf like protrusions that spread out of the main body of the toothbrush.
I’ve finished making my pod for the group project, I decode to use my personally project as an influence and made my pod a bike Rack and a bedroom for the person to live in! I like the way it looks and I think it will look great in the fish tank.
we walked around Cardiff for hidden places that we could possibly build a miniature city, we looked at pieces of land where there where no buildings and population, we also looked at holes in walls, gaps in stones, little gaps on the pavements etc.
the last two pictures were taken in Venice, I think little alley ways like theses would be quite good to build a miniature city in, I like the 8th photo in because its an abandoned railway station that no one uses and to do something with this would be great, t would breath new life into something that is hidden and forgotten by the people in the city.
here are some of my initial ideas for designs, I’ve kept to making my ideas look abit futuristic, however im also trying to keep my ideas close to the present days because in my opinion the tragic state of bike storage in cities across the world needs to be sorted out now. I quite like the idea o the Red drawing because its compact, and can be made from cheap metals or plastic, however I find the design so far abit to bland and not exciting enough so I need to work out what I can do to make this more appealing and more interesting for the users of this product.
using the feedback I received today I have done to constructive and new thinking about how I could make my product look less scary and more scientific also how I could make it look less like the London eye, so I might change the shape to just one molecule shape instead of building loads into a geometric shape, this will make it look less like a Ferris wheel and more like its aimed to wards a certain point in science, I my change the shape into a sphere instead, im going to model his out of straws, I think a sphere would look more aesthetically pleasing however it doesn’t relate towards the topic im looking into.
also instead of using LED strips im going to use this new lighting method called EL wire, im going to use this because it will make my lamp look amazing, because it doesn’t shine it glows which will add a nice effect and I can get this in red.
hello, today I have a feedback session on my idea, they liked it as it does massively reflect science however its a little scary and halloweeny so I need to find away to make it less creepy, also they said I need to look at experimenting with different materials such as rubber and glass, however I think it would be a waste of material if I was to use it on my project and I also think that glass would be too fragile to use, so I want my lamp to look amazing and aesthetically pleasing to the user but I need to think sustainable and cheap minded when it comes to the material so I think I will just stick to acrylic plastic, also they said it may be taken the wrong way as it looks a little like the London eye, so im going to look at different shapes I can use.
im going to make my product out of pentagon shapes that represent the structure of haemoglobin, the shape i want to make is a blood cell disk which kind of looks like a wheel with a tyre on it, I think this shape will work well with my whole idea, which is to have the disk held up by an axle which will allow people to interact with my lamp by spinning it, this motion will represent flow which is what blood does. I will use the laser cutter to cut out the pentagons and the little parts that will hold them together. I have a problem which is whether to put a light bulb in on the inside or a strip of LED lights.
the material I will be using is acrylic plastic, red acrylic how ever it will be translucent so the light on the inside can escape and create interesting shapes o the ceilings and walls.
my other idea was to make the disk out of small tubes and then fill the tubes with a small amount of fake blood this would show flow more however it would be hard to make the pentagon shape with the tubes and I have a limited space of to to construct this lamp so it would be to hard to find all the materials and put it all together.
Hemoglobin has a quaternary structure characteristic of many multi-subunit globular proteins. Most of the amino acids in hemoglobin form alpha helices, connected by short non-helical segments. Hydrogen bonds stabilize the helical sections inside this protein, causing attractions within the molecule, folding each polypeptide chain into a specific shape. Hemoglobin’s quaternary structure comes from its four subunits in roughly a tetrahedral arrangement.
In most vertebrates, the hemoglobin molecule is an assembly of four globular protein subunits. Each subunit is composed of a protein chain tightly associated with a non-protein heme group. Each protein chain arranges into a set of alpha-helix structural segments connected together in a globin fold arrangement, so called because this arrangement is the same folding motif used in other heme/globin proteins such as myoglobin. This folding pattern contains a pocket that strongly binds the heme group
so I want to base my lamp around haemoglobin (blood) not in a goth way but I want to use the structure that takes place to make it and I want to use the way it flows to make my product.

I like the structure in both of these images, and I think it would be possible to make a strong structure out of the structures, that would look good, the structure is mostly made from pentagons so this will make it easy to join them together.
We have been set a two and a half week task to design a new working unique lamp/lighting unit that must be inspired by, Nature, Biology and physics, so I could base it around natural forms such as cells and molecular structures or it could be based around robotics, mechanical engineering or formulas. We are designing this product for the “Fab Lab”, I think this is a very interesting project because I could do so much with the shape I have a wide range of ideas already, and using my biology background I can fully take advantage of the task.
